References to the sword:
Genesis 3:24
After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing
back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
A Sword is a long piece of metal that has
had an edge added to it, It's that simple. They are used as a cutting and/or
thrusting weapon. Many historical civilizations throughout the history of the
world have utilized this tool/weapon. The sword, basically, consists of a blade
(with either one or two edges), a guard, a hilt (handle), and a pommel (the
butt of the sword). The way the sword was used varies from century to century
and culture to culture. The basic intent has always been to defend oneself.
In modern times the use has changed, for the most part, from defense and battle
to that of appreciation and value. The sword is rich with history making them
a sought after collectible. Some collect for the history and beauty of the
many styles and types of swords. Others collect them for reenactments and swordsmanship.
There are many replica swords available to the modern day collector. Some made
of modern steels and made as true replicas right down to the hammer marks that
were evident on the earliest blades. Some use forged steel as they did in the
early centuries to match the look and feel of the original. Many of these come
from Spain which is rich in sword history, this is reflected in the quality
of the replicas made in Spain as well as the cost. However the true collector
recognizes this quality and understands that the price is well justified. Others
are made in Asian countries and vary in quality based on region and manufacturing.
They range in price from ridiculously cheap to justifiably costly.
On of the
most popular swords being collected today is the Samurai Katana. The
Katana originated in Japan and was the choice weapon of the Samurai Warrior.
An original Katana, if you can find one, can be worth thousands of dollars.
The cost is based on the Sword smith who made it, where it was made, and in
some cases, how it was tested. Many Katanas where tested in a horrific manner,
on humans! It was not uncommon for a Smith to go to the local prison and gain
permission to test his steel Nihonto on a condemned prisoner. The test and
results were then recorded and engraved on the tang of the blade as well as
the signature of the sword smith. These are some of the most collectible swords.
